Conversations abound in the personal development space about the importance of finding your purpose. And usually, they revolve around the idea that we’re each born with a gift to contribute to humanity in some way. Our life purpose is sometimes defined as our “dharma,” which translates from Sanskrit as, “right way of living” or “path of rightness.”
But while this definition encompasses some of what it means to find your purpose, it also leaves room for misinterpretation. It’s easy to conclude that there is some universally “right” path that we’re supposed to find our way to. And of course, if there’s a right path, it means there’s also a wrong path.
This way of thinking can cause us to struggle, frustration, and a lot of unnecessary suffering. We waste a lot of energy trying to “find” something that is actually intrinsic to who we are.
Your life purpose doesn’t need to be found; it is intrinsic to who you are.
The first misconception about finding your purpose is that life purpose is something that has to be found. In truth, your purpose already exists and vibrates at the very core of who you are. You feel your purpose come alive when you’re engaged in something that utilizes your most cherished skills. Your purpose is activated when you feel all lit up with interest or enthusiasm. It’s being called into action anytime the clearest, most aligned aspect of you shows up in any given project or interaction. In other words, your purpose is to be aligned. And when you are in alignment, you are fulfilling your highest purpose.
Here are 3 steps for activating the Principle of Alignment to find and express your highest purpose in life.
Step #1: Remember (often) what it feels like to be aligned.
Let’s begin with a definition of terms. By “alignment,” I mean the state of being in which our hearts and minds are in perfect sync with our divine nature. It’s those moments in time when we are at our most creative and resourceful. In the state of alignment, our actions are inspired rather than contrived, and far more effective because they’re backed up by our full spiritual power. There is an unobstructed flow between the physical and nonphysical aspects of us. And this connection yields far greater results than anything we can accomplish from a disconnected state.
You’ve experienced many moments of alignment in your life – though you may not have labeled them as such. You’ve had those days where good luck seems to follow you wherever you go. You know what it feels like to be internally resourceful and resilient, where obstacles either rarely arise or are easily overcome.
Alignment is always accompanied by a feeling of being in the right place at the right time. It’s a feeling of ease and grace; of going with the flow rather than trying to make things happen. The feeling of alignment is exquisite. When we’re aligned, we feel more beautiful and fluid in our bodies. We feel guided, sourced, and blessed. And – because our actions are infused with energy – we accomplish more with less effort.
Of course, some write these experiences off as luck or coincidence. And as a result, they have no idea that alignment is a state of consciousness that can be accessed on purpose. And this is why those who understand energy mastery are at such a distinct advantage.
You can activate alignment on purpose.
Once you understand that alignment is simply a heightened state of consciousness, you can tend to your alignment on purpose.
The best way to go about this is to remember what it feels like to be perfectly in synch. Replay the experiences in your life that had a feeling of grace or flow to them. Relive those moments when everything worked out beautifully. Recall those experiences when you felt absolute faith; when you knew life was happening for you, rather than to you.
The more often you return your consciousness to the state of alignment, the more easily you’ll be able to access this state on purpose. And eventually, alignment will become your energetic set point.
Step #2: Make your personal alignment your number one priority.
You’d never begin a road trip in a car that was low on fuel. And you wouldn’t try to withdraw cash from an account that was in the red. And yet, how many times do we begin a project or conversation from a state of energetic depletion?
The energy you bring into each encounter of your life matters. A lot.
Human beings are both energy transmitters and highly attuned energy receivers. We transmit the energetic frequency of our thoughts and emotions like radio waves. And all those in our energetic vicinity pick up on and respond to the frequencies we’re sending out.
If your mind is racing or your emotions are turbulent, you’ll create vastly different results than you would if you were clear and calm. Aligned energy inspires the best in others and reveals previously unseen solutions. Chaotic energy creates confusion and uncertainty. This is why it’s so important to get into alignment at the start of each day, just as it is to put gas in your car.
Make your alignment part of your daily morning ritual. This is as simple as carving out a few minutes each day for things that feel good. If a hot bath relaxes and recharges you, take one. If going for a walk in the fresh air clears your mind, prioritize that. To those who argue that they don’t have time to get into alignment, I say you don’t have time not to. When you’re in alignment, finding your purpose becomes effortless.
Step #3: Call forth the energy of your “aligned” self in each important aspect of your life.
If you stop to reflect on it, you’ll discover that finding your purpose is different in different aspects of your life. For example, in your career expression, you may desire to be clear-minded and efficient. But your purpose in your intimate relationships might be to experience partnership or to express devotion or lightheartedness.
To discover and fulfill your purpose in each important area of your life, identify the qualities that are most important to you. Then connect with the essence of this energy before you engage.
Before spending time with your kids, for example, align your personal vibration with your intent that your relationship be harmonious, evolving, and fun. If you’re doing something that nurtures your body, begin by connecting with the purpose you desire to achieve. Then imagine filling yourself up with whatever energy you desire at that moment. It could be vitality, stamina, sexuality, relaxation, increased immunity, or any other frequency that will best serve you.
Make it a daily practice to fill yourself up from the inside with the highest, best-feeling frequency you have access to. In this way, you become magnetic to and receptive to everything you desire.
Even if you devote just one minute out of each hour to making sure your actions are aligned with your intent, the cumulative effect of this over time is staggering – and the results you produce will be far more effective. Your purpose unfolds naturally – even joyfully and seemingly magically – from the internal state of alignment.
