In the wake of a bad decision (or several!), it’s easy to lose faith in the existence of inner wisdom. But inner wisdom – or gut instinct – is a very real force. And learning how to align with it is the key to making the most joyful decision in any relationship or situation. Below are some things to consider in order to stay in tune with your inner wisdom.
You have the intelligence of the universe flowing through you.
Consider for a moment the premise that you are an integral, intimate part of this infinite universe. The invisible force that keeps our planet spinning in orbit is the same force that keeps your heart beating. This means, the inexplicable intelligence that compels a seed to grow towards the sun also moves you in body, mind, and spirit.
This intelligence, this life force, is a stream of inner wisdom that is always accessible to you. Your inner wisdom isn’t a far-out concept; it’s always speaking to you. And it doesn’t always communicate through harps and angels or burning bushes! In fact, your inner wisdom communicates in extremely simple ways:
For example:
- While driving, you have an impulse to take an alternate route.
- Someone mentions a book – or a movie, or a product – and you light up with interest, often with no idea why.
- Instantly upon meeting someone, you have a strong sense of comfort – or discomfort – when you’re with them.
- You are offered what sounds like a promising opportunity, and immediately your gut says, “No.”
Inner wisdom speaks in Hell Yes’s and Hell No’s.
Intuition communicates through feelings… a knowing… an inkling… that bypasses the complexities of our rational minds. It feels like being drawn to or repelled by something or someone, for no apparent reason.
Author Tom Robbins was referencing inner wisdom when he wrote, “There are only two mantras in all the universe. Yum and yuck. Pay attention and you’ll notice that, when presented with a choice, your instincts will always respond with a “hell yes,” or a “hell no.” You just need to be still enough to receive this impulse.
Inner wisdom is available and accessible to every living being. Watch any animal and you’ll see how in tune they are with their natural instinct. But because human beings are rigidly socialized, we often lose touch with this silent knowing.
Here are 3 questions that will help you bypass your intellect, and connect directly with the stream of infinite, inner wisdom. Taking a moment to consider these prior to making any choice, will support you in making better decisions.
Inner Wisdom Question #1: When I envision myself taking this course of action, do I feel more empowered or disempowered?
Being in tune with your inner wisdom means being in alignment with the energy that creates worlds. This energy stream is always leading you in the direction of your highest good. When you’re in harmony with this stream, you feel interested, inspired, enlivened, and empowered. Your energy body is actually opening up to contain more universal, life force energy. When you consider a course of action and feel empowered as you do, chances are good you’re on the right track.
But when the decision you’re pondering shuts you down, lowers your energy, or makes you want to guard yourself, take pause. Your body is actually communicating to you that either the course of action itself, or the way you’re viewing it, is not in your best interest.
Take a moment to actually breathe into the sensations you’re having. Emotions are energy in motion. They arise in order to deliver us a message. This is your inner wisdom in action. Open yourself to receiving the wisdom your body is sharing with you. You’ll be amazed at how much information you can access simply by asking the question.
Inner Wisdom Question #2: Will this course of action support my evolution and expansion?
The river of life-giving creative energy that sources all things flows only in one direction, and that direction is forward. Everything in the universe is in a continual process of evolution and expansion. And our inner wisdom is always prompting us to keep up with this expansion.
This question can help you to distinguish one important thing: Is the subject you’re pondering more about the future you’re creating, or the past you’ve already lived? If it’s calling you toward an inspiring future, you will feel expansive and alive. If you’re about to repeat a pattern from the past, you’ll feel disinterested, contracted – maybe even resentful or bored. These are all vital messages being sent to you directly from your inner wisdom.
The final question is perhaps the most important of all:
Inner Wisdom Question #3: What am I afraid might happen if I listen to my inner wisdom?
It’s valuable to free-write your answer to this question, and to then read it back to yourself. You’ll discover that it’s almost always our self-imposed limitations that hold us back from following our intuition.
The stream of universal intelligence is flowing through us, saying in its own language, “Come this way!” But too often, our habits of thinking resist going with that flow.
Our minds are expert at justifying and excusing our current circumstances, arguing that it’s greedy to desire anything more. We rationalize that it’s safer to stick to the current plan, even when our inner wisdom is telling us that plan is not being supported by the universe.
Remember that your inner wisdom communicates with you in the simple, basic language of sensation. When considering a course of action evokes an uncomfortable sensation, give yourself permission to pause. And when a potential decision generates shivers of excitement, give yourself permission to go for it!
Remember that you are never “stuck” with any past decision. Because in every moment, you have a fresh new opportunity to listen and to realign with the universal intelligence that supports you. Your inner wisdom will always lead you back into harmony with the divine energy flow.
