It’s easy to uncover the limiting beliefs you hold about yourself. All you have to do is examine the current conditions of your life.
I realize this might sound harsh. And that’s because most people are under the impression that the conditions of their lives dictate what they believe. For example, if you’re short on money, you’d naturally come to believe that money is scarce.
But our circumstances do not create our beliefs. In fact, it’s the other way around. What you believe – about yourself, others, and life in general – determines the quality of the experiences you attract.
What you believe, you attract.
Let’s look at this in terms of a common, everyday scenario.
Imagine that a woman desires to be in a fabulous intimate relationship, but has an “I’m not good enough” belief running in the background. On the surface, she may be taking every action possible to increase her chance of meeting men. But if deep down she believes something is wrong with her, she will attract people who reinforce that belief.
Her limiting belief will actually narrow the range of opportunities she is able to perceive. Or cause her to reject opportunities that are right in front of her without ever giving them a chance. It’s as if our desires exist in the realm of possibility, but our limiting beliefs keep us from accessing them. And this is because, like everything else in the universe, our beliefs are made up of energy.
Your limiting beliefs transmit energy that is registered by everyone in your life.
In every waking moment, you’re sending out an energetic signal that is transmitted through the airways like a radio wave. Your thoughts broadcast an energetic vibration, as do your moods and emotions. Likewise, the expectations you hold about a particular interaction influence the way that interaction unfolds. And your beliefs about yourself are at the very basis of all you attract and don’t attract.
Beliefs that are aligned with the energy of limitlessness and possibility magnetize greater possibilities into our lives. And likewise, limiting or self-deprecating beliefs shrink the range of experiences we will allow ourselves to have. And as such, they hold us apart from the very things we desire the most.
Here is a list of some common limiting beliefs that may be blocking your ability to manifest:
- Other people are smarter, prettier, more capable, or [fill-in-the-blank] than I am.
- Hard work is the only path to success.
- My happiness is dependent on others’ approval.
- Life is hard.
- Relationships are a struggle.
- It’s hard to make ends meet.
These outdated, limiting beliefs exist not as just some mental construct, but as a real, palpable energy that permeates both body and mind. To change a belief that no longer serves, we need to be willing to feel and then release this energy.
Here is a quick energy mastery exercise, adapted from my forthcoming book, The Desire Factor, that will help you transform one of your limiting beliefs:
1. Start by bringing into your awareness something that you deeply desire.
This could be a more steady or abundant stream of money. It could be an exciting new relationship. It could be an increase in your number of projects or clients. Just allow yourself to identify one thing that is right now igniting a desire within you. And as you settle on this, acknowledge the strength and potency of this desire.
2. Next, deliberately bring to mind all the reasons why you’re closer to fulfilling this desire than you’ve ever been before.
You might say things to yourself such as, “I now have more clarity about what I really want and why. I have more tools available to me at this moment than at any other time in my life. I am understanding more and more about how manifestations occur, and I am becoming more masterful at directing my energy.” Deliberately advocate for your own success by bringing to mind all of the evidence that already points to it.
3. Visualize a white screen in your mind.
And printed on this white screen are the most dominant beliefs you hold in relation to this desire. As you read each one, notice how it feels. If it is a belief that feels good and you want to keep it, imagine surrounding it with light and energizing it even more. If it’s a belief that feels bad and you want to change it, imagine erasing it from the white screen. And in its place, allow yourself to see a statement of how you intend to feel instead. Here is a short list of affirming statements to choose from:
Affirming Beliefs About Myself
- I love myself.
- I am open to and worthy of all the abundant blessings of this universe.
- I am trusting of nourishment and support in this universe.
- Life is supposed to feel good.
- I trust myself.
- I trust the universe.
- I deserve to have it all.
- I am unlimited.
- My desires unfold in my life easily.
- Everything I need is already within me.
- I am whole and complete within myself.
4. Cultivate a feeling of joyful expectancy in relation to your desire.
Think back to a time when you felt eager, positive expectation, and allow that feeling to manifest as a physical sensation. How does joyful eagerness feel in your physical body? Breathe into that feeling for a few minutes, allowing it to expand.
5. Acknowledge that you are an energetic being, who manifests by virtue of your thoughts and beliefs.
Right now, you are drawing to yourself all things that are for your higher good. You are magnetic to the love, the abundance, and the success you desire. Feel all manner of good things coming into your vibrational experience. Your only work is to receive. As your light shines brightly, pulsating outward, it is simultaneously bringing more light in. The more light you can hold, the more success, abundance, and prosperity flows into your experience.
